Respiration in lakes

چکیده
This chapter reviews, from a quantitative perspective, estimates and models of planktonic and benthic respiration in lakes, as derived from bottle and core incubations. Using data gleaned from the literature, empiricalmodels of planktonic andbenthic respiration are presented inwhich respiration is shown todepend primarily on lake trophic conditions and, secondarily, on temperature and other factors such as dissolved organic carbon loading and community structure. The possibilities and limits of alternative methods of measuring lake respiration and its components are discussed. Extrapolations of the findings to the globe suggest that about 62–76 Tmol of carbon are respired annually in the world’s lakes, exceeding the estimated gross primary production of these ecosystems. Lakes thus contribute significantly to the oxidation of landderived organic carbon.

Winter respiration of allochthonous and autochthonous organic carbon in a subarctic clear-water lake
We studied a small subarctic lake to assess the magnitude of winter respiration and the organic carbon (OC) source for this respiration. The concentration and stable isotopic composition (d13C) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) accumulating in the lake water under ice was analyzed over one winter (7 months). The DIC concentration increased and the d13C of DIC decreased over time, with the gre...
متن کاملBioturbation enhances the aerobic respiration of lake sediments in warming lakes
While lakes occupy less than 2% of the total surface of the Earth, they play a substantial role in global biogeochemical cycles. For instance, shallow lakes are important sites of carbon metabolism. Aerobic respiration is one of the important drivers of the carbon metabolism in lakes. In this context, bioturbation impacts of benthic animals (biological reworking of sediment matrix and ventilati...

متن کاملEffects of whole-lake manipulations of nutrient loading and food web structure on planktonic respiration
We assessed planktonic respiration in whole-lake manipulations of nutrient loading and food web structure in three manipulated and one unmanipulated lake over 7 years. The manipulations created strong contrasts in zooplankton body size across a series of nutrient loads. Large-bodied zooplankton were suppressed by planktivorous fish in one lake, while in the other two manipulated lakes, large-bo...
متن کاملDirect measurement of the d13C signature of carbon respired by bacteria in lakes: Linkages to potential carbon sources, ecosystem baseline metabolism, and CO2 fluxes
Using a novel method to measure the isotopic signature (d13C) of respiratory CO2 produced by bacterioplankton, we determined the proportion of terrigenous vs. algal-derived organic carbon (OC) respired by bacteria in a series of eight lakes in southern Québec (Canada). The lakes are located within the same general basin but span a large range in trophic status, morphometry, and dissolved OC (DO...
